Mycoplasma genitalium

Epidemiology: - emerging STD - 21% of young women in on study [2] - infection (vs colonization) persists for > 12 months - incidence higher in black women [2] - no evidence supporting nonsexual routes of transmission in the medical literature [5] Clinical manifestations: - urethritis & cervicitis like chlamydia Laboratory: - Mycoplasma genitalium DNA - nucleic acid amplification tests are the only reliable method of diagnosis - may not be widely available Management: 1) continue to follow the CDC recommendations for urethritis but .. doxycycline is not reliable, azithromycin once ? -> azithromycin for 5 days (Z-Pak) 500 mg day 1, then 250 mg QD 2) oxifloxacin (Avelox) 400 mg daily for 10 days is sometimes effective
