Mycobacterium & acid-fast bacterium (AFB) culture

Indications: - Mycobacterial infection Specimen: 1) sputum, tissue, urine, body fluid 2) swabs not acceptable 3) minimum volume: 10 mL or small piece of tissue 4) container: -> sterile container with a tight-fitting cap Notes: 1) detection of Mycobacterium spp. is improved by use of concentration techniques 2) smears & cultures of pleural fluid, peritoneal fluid & pericardial fluid often have a low yield 3) multiple cultures may improve yield Antibiotic sensitivity also performed.
