mupirocin (Bactroban)
Tradename: Bactroban.
Indications:
- topical treatment of impetigo due to S. aureus, beta-hemolytic Streptococcus & S. pyogenes.
- eradication of nasal colonization of pathogen carriers with MRSA
- apparently MRSA resistance develops
- furunculosis [3]
- ecthyma
- folliculitis
- epidermolysis bullosa
- prevention of infection from traumatic wounds [3]
Dosage:
- impetigo: apply 2% ointment TID for 3-5 days.
- nasal: apply BID 5 days.
Ointment: 2% (15 g, 30 g). Bactroban nasal 1 g tube, carton of 10.
Adverse effects:
- not common (1-10%)
- swelling, pruritus, rash, erythema, dry skin, burning, stinging, pain, tenderness
