RNA-binding protein Musashi homolog 2 (Musashi-2, MSI2)

Function: 1) RNA binding protein 2) regulates expression of target mRNAs at translation level 3) role in proliferation & maintenance of stem cells in CNS 4) regulates normal hematopoiesis [3] 4) phosphorylated Structure: - contains 2 RRM domains (RNA recognition motif) Compartment: - cytoplasm, associated with polysomes Alternative splicing: named isoforms=3 Expression: - ubiquitous, expressed at low levels - up-regulated in astrocytes after brain injury Pathology: - chromosomal translocations involving MSI2, t(7;17)(p15;q23) with HOXA9 & t(7;17)(q32-34;q23) may contribute to disease progression in chronic myeloid leukemia - overexpressed in myeloid leukemia stem cells [3] - expression levels in human myeloid leukemia directly correlate with decreased survival in patients [3]
