Etiology: 1) infection a) tuberculosis b) Rocky Mountain spotted fever c) brucellosis d) subacute bacterial endocarditis e) visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar) 2) malignancies a) leukemias b) myeloproliferative syndrome c) others? 3) hemolytic anemia 4) chronic idiopathic neutropenia 5) granulomatous diseases - sarcoidosis 6) regional enteritis, inflammatory bowel disease [3] 7) connective tissue diseases Management: - persistent monocytosis without obvious infection should be referred for evaluation of possible stem cell disorder, especially when associated with cytopenia(s) [2]
