Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet
A hybrid of the low-sodium DASH diet & the Mediterranean diet.
Clinical significance:
- associated with slower cognitive decline in healthy older people*
- may help prevent cognitive decline after stroke
- may lower risk of Alzheimer's disease [4,5]
- may delay onset of Parkinson's disease [6]
- associated with better cognitive function independent of common brain pathology
- MIND diet may contribute to cognitive resilience in the elderly [7]
- adherence to a MIND diet is associated with a reduced risk of dementia in middle-age & older adults [8]
- MIND diet did not affect cognitive decline (within 3 years) in adults > 65 years with a family history of dementia [9]
- adherence to a MIND diet associated with larger volumes of thalamus, putamen, pallidum, hippocampus, & nucleus accumbens & lower white matter hyperintensities [10]
- observed regardless of genetic predispositions of Alzheimer's disease
- MIND diet & Mediterranean diet associated with less post-mortem Alzheimer's disease pathology, mainly beta-amyloid [11]
- higher green leafy vegetables associated with less Alzheimer's disease pathology [11]
- MIND diet associated with slower cognitive decline in older adults (Black or White)
- may vary with lifestyle & vascular factors [12]

Management:
- low-salt diet
- focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein
