metipranolol (Optipranolol)
Tradename: Optipranolol.
Indications:
- increased intraocular pressure
- chronic open-angle glaucoma
- closed-angle glaucoma
- secondary glaucoma
Contraindications: Caution:
1) bronchial asthma
2) sinus bradycardia
3) 2nd & 3rd degree AV block
4) heart failure
Dosage: 1 drop OU BID. 0.3% (5 mL, 10 mL).
Pharmacokinetics:
1) initial reduction of intraocular pressure in 30 minutes
2) maximal reduction of intraocular pressure in 2 hours
3) duration of action: up to 24 hours
Adverse effects:
1) common (> 10%)
- mild ocular stinging & discomfort (transient, 56%)
- eye irritation
2) less common (1-10%)
- blurred vision, eyebrow ache
3) uncommon (< 1%)
- conjunctivitis, blepharitis, bradycardia, AV block, congestive heart failure (CHF), asthenia, tearing, erythema, itching, keratitis, photophobia, decreased corneal sensitivity, bronchospasm
Mechanism of action:
1) non-selective beta blocker
2) reduces aqueous humor production
