methylergonovine (Methergine, Erezingen, Methylergobasin)

Tradename: Methergine. Indications: post-partum bleeding Contraindications: 1) pregnancy 2) induction of labor, uterine inertia 3) threatened or spontaneous abortion Dosage: 1) 0.2 mg IM/IV/PO QID PRN for 2-7 days 2) up to 5 doses IM/IV, then switch to PO 3) 48 hours of treatment generally sufficient Tabs: 0.2 mg. Injection: 0.2 mg/mL (1 mL) Adverse effects: 1) common (> 10%) - hypertension, headache, seizures 2) less common (1-10%) - nausea/vomiting 3) uncommon (< 1%) - chest pain (temporary), dyspnea, hematuria, thrombophlebitis, water intoxication, hallucinations, leg cramps, dizziness, tinnitus, nasal congestion, diarrhea, diaphoresis, palpitations, taste disturbance
