Indications: - prediction of 28 day mortality in patients with suspected sepsis - about as useful as serum lactate in assessing prognosis [1] Method: - 9 independent predictors of mortality 1) terminal illness 2) tachypnea or hypoxia 3) septic shock 4) thrombocytopenia (< 150,000/mm3) 5) neutrophilic bands > 5% 6) age > 65 years 7) lower respiratory tract infection 8) nursing home residence 9) altered mental status
