mitogen-activated protein kinase 11; mitogen-activated protein kinase p38 beta; MAP kinase p38 beta; p38b; p38-2; stress-activated protein kinase 2 (MAPK11, PRKM11, SAPK2)

Function: - kinase involved in a signal transduction pathway activated by changes in the osmolarity of the extracellular environment, by cytokines, or by environmental stress - phosphorylates preferentially transcription factor ATF2 - activated by phosphorylation on Thr & Tyr by MKK6 - inhibited by pyridinyl-imidazole related compounds - dually phosphorylated on Thr-180 & Tyr-182, which activates the enzyme (probable) Cofactor: Mg+2 (putative) Structure: - TXY motif contains the Thr & Tyr whose phosphorylation activates the MAP kinases - belongs to the protein kinase superfamily, CMGC Ser/Thr protein kinase family, MAP kinase subfamily - contains 1 protein kinase domain Expression: - highest levels in the brain & heart - also expressed in placenta, lung, liver, skeletal muscle, kidney & pancreas
