Pathology:
- see scombroid fish poisoning
- food poisoning associated with neurologic manifestations 1-3 hours after ingestion
- significant levels of mercury may be found in tuna
- albacore tuna contains higher amounts than canned tuna
- 20% of canned light tuna samples contain double the average level of mercury [2]
Management:
- Consumer Report recommends
- pregnant women should avoid eating tuna [2]
- young children & women of childbearing age should not eat yellowfin tuna & big eye tuna in sushi [2]
