Dosage: 1) 4 mL/kg PO up to 300 mL [1] 2) 4-8 oz once; may be repeated once [2] Liquid: 10 oz bottle. Pharmacokinetics: 1) onset of bowel relief is in 3-6 hours 2) elimination :route kidney) Adverse effects: - repeated or frequent administration may cause a) hypermagnesemia b) electrolyte imbalance c) dehydration Mechanism of action: 1) saline laxative 2) Mg+2 may stimulate release of cholecystokinin, which increases motor & sensory action in the GI tract
