myelin-associated glycoprotein; siglec-4a (MAG GMA)

Function: - adhesion molecule in postnatal neural development - mediates sialic-acid dependent cell-cell interactions between neuronal & myelinating cells (oligodendrocytes) - preferentially binds to alpha-2,3-linked sialic acid (putative) - binds to RTN4R (putative) Structure: - belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily, SIGLEC (sialic acid binding Ig-like lectin) family - contains 4 Ig-like C2-type domains (immunoglobulin-like) - contains 1 Ig-like V-type domain (immunoglobulin-like) Compartment: membrane Pathology: - IgM monoclonal antibody binds to MAG in ~50% of patients with MGUS
