lymphangitis
Inflammation of lymphatic vessels.
Etiology:
1) bacterial infection
- generally Streptococcus pyogenes [3]
- Nocardia, tularemia, Mycobacterium marinum
2) parasitic infection
- filiariasis
- Leishmania braziliensis
3) fungal infection
- sporotrichosis
Pathology:
- inflammation of lymphatic vessels
- lymphatic spread from injured area or ulceration, generally on arm or leg
Clinical manifestations:
1) acute episode lasting days or longer
2) red streak(s) on skin with tenderness
3) raised border around infected area
3) enlarged, tender lymph nodes (lymphadenitis)
4) fever
5) headache & myalgias may be noted [3]
