indapamide (Lozol)
Tradename: Lozol.
Indications:
1) management of mild to moderate hypertension
2) treatment of edema
a) congestive heart failure
b) nephrotic syndrome
Dosage:
- 1.25-5 mg PO QD.
Tabs: 1.25, 2.5 mg
Adverse effects:
1) not common (1-10%)
- hypokalemia
2) uncommon (< 1%)
- arrhythmia, weak pulse, hypotension, mood changes, photosensitivity, fluid & electrolyte imbalances (hypocalcemia, hypomagnesemia, hyponatremia), hyperglycemia, pre-renal azotemia, shortness of breath, increased thirst, xerostomia, blood dyscrasias, muscle cramps, unusual weakness, paresthesia in hands, feet or lips
3) other
- hypercalcemia
- hyperuricemia
- rash
- pancreatitis
- vasculitis
* Appears to have less of an adverse effect on serum lipids than do other thiazides
Mechanism of action:
- enhances secretion of Na+, Cl- & H2O by interfering with Na+ & Cl- transport across the renal tubular epithelium mediated by SLC12A3
- site of action: distal tubule.
