Seasonique (LoSeasonique)

Extended cycle oral contraceptive. New for 2006. (91 day menstrual cycle) Indications: - contraception - LoSeasonique effective in obese women [2] Dosage: - 1 tab (Seasonique or LoSeasonique) QD for 84 days - low dose (10 ug) of ethinyl estradiol for 7 days - restart cycle Tabs: - Seasonique: 150 ug levonorgestrel & 30 ug ethinyl estradiol - LoSeasonique: 100 ug levonorgestrel & 20 ug ethinyl estradiol Adverse effects: -> may be more spotting between menstrual periods (may be less bleeding relative to Seasonale) Mechanism of action: 1) allows women to cycle every 91 days (seasonally) 2) contraceptive suppresses endometrial thickening, thus monthly bleeding unnecessary to slough endometrium
