long term depression (LTD)
LTD is an activity-dependent synapse-specific decrease in synaptic efficacy. It is long-lasting, persisting for days to weeks.
LTD is a form of neuronal plasticity that may form the basis for forgetting.
Ca+2 influx through NMDA receptors is critical for induction of LTD [1]. In contast to LTP, low levels of intracellular Ca+2 are involved in LTD. [2]
Dephosphorylation of S845 in GluR1 of AMPA receptors may also play a role. [2]
