liposuction (lipectomy, lipoplasty)
Indications:
- localized adiposity (cosmetic disorder)
Contraindications:
1) severe cardiovascular disease
2) severe coagulation disorder
3) thrombocytopenia or thrombocytosis
4) pregnancy
Procedure:
1) office based procedure
2) local anesthetic (lidocaine)
3) PO or IM anxiolytics, sedatives, narcotics not associated with respiratory depression may be used
Complications:
- fat removed during liposuction returns within 1 year, but to different location(s) [1]
- surgical site infection
- invasive group A Streptococcus involving 13 medical spa clients, resuling in 1 death (2014) [2]
