lingual thyroid

Decent of thyroid gives rise to thyroglossal duct. Remnants of thyroid persisting along this tract include: 1) lingual thyroid 2) thyroglossal cyst or nodule 3) pyramidal lobe of thyroid, a structure contiguous with the thyroid isthmus The lingual thyroid may rarely be the only functioning thyroid tissue.
