luteinizing hormone; lutropin (LH)

Function: - carbohydrate sulfotransferase (CHST8, CHST9) required for biosynthesis of luteinizing hormone - secreted in bursts in direct response to each pulse of GnRH from the hypothalamus - binds to LH-receptor on surface of Leydig cells of the testes - evokes secretion of testosterone & estradiol from Leydig cells Pathology: - gene mutations in beta subunit (LH-beta): a) female patients present with amenorrhea b) no androgen precursors are produced by theca cells Pharmacokinetics: - plasma 1/2 life is 20-30 minutes
