galectin-9 (soluble galactoside-binding lectin 9, HOM-HD-21, ecalectin, LGALS9)

Function: - binds galactosides - may play a role in thymocyte-epithelial interactions relevant to the biology of the thymus - short isoform acts as an eosinophil chemoattractant - ligand for HAVCR2/TIM3 - induces T-helper type 1 lymphocyte (Th1) death Structure: - contains two homologous but distinct carbohydrate-binding domains - contains 2 galectin domains Compartment: - cytoplasm (putative) - secreted, may also be secreted by a non-classical secretory pathway (putative) Alternative splicing: - named isoforms=2 - additional isoforms seem to exist Expression: - expressed in peripheral blood leukocytes & lymphatic tissues Pathology: overexpressed in Hodgkin's disease tissue
