Lewy neurite

Abnormal neurites found in patients with diffuse Lewy body disease & some cases of Parkinson's disease. Distribution: 1) CA2-CA3 of the hippocampus 2) amygdala, accessory cortical nuclei 3) nucleus basalis of Meynert 4) brainstem of patients with diffuse Lewy body disease 5) olfactory bulb 6) intermediolateral columns of spinal cord 7) sympathetic and parasympathetic ganglia 8) enteric, cardiac, and pelvic neurons 9) adrenal medulla [2] Components: components of Lewy neurites include: 1) neurofilaments 2) ubiquitin 3) alpha synuclein Pathology: - the mechanism of formation of Lewy neurites & the role of Lewy neurites in the pathogenesis of Lewy body dementia is unknown - Lewy neurites may contribute to the dementia of Lewy body dementia, but may be found in cases of Parkinson's disease without dementia
