left atrial enlargement (LAE)

Electrocardiographic (ECG) criteria: 1) p wave duration > 120 ms 2) biphasic p wave in V1 with negative component > 1 mm x 40 ms 3) p axis < 30 degrees 4) notched p wave in leads II & III with notch in lead II > 40 ms in duration Complications: 1) atrial fibrillation 2) dysphagia (extrinsic esophageal compression)
