kinesin heavy chain (ubiquitous kinesin heavy chain, UKHC, KIF5B KNS KNS1)
Function:
- microtubule-dependent motor required for normal distribution of mitochondria & lysosomes (putative)
- kinesin oligomer composed of two heavy chains & two light chains
- interacts with GRIP1 (putative)
- interacts with SYBU
Structure:
- composed of three structural domains:
a) large globular N- terminal domain responsible for motor activity of kinesin (hydrolyzes ATP & binds microtubule)
b) central alpha-helical coiled coil domain that mediates heavy chain dimerization
c) small globular C-terminal domain which interacts with other proteins (such as the kinesin light chains), vesicles & membranous organelles
- belongs to the kinesin-like protein family, kinesin subfamily
- contains 1 kinesin-motor domain
Compartment:
- uniformly distributed between soma & neurites in hippocampal neurons (putative)
