Indications: - renal transplantation Procedure: - unilateral nephrectomy for donation of healthy kidney Adverse effects: - living kidney donors have survival similar to that of nondonors - risk of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is not increased - kidney from older donor more likely to result in transplantation rejection than from younger donor [2] - risk of mortality or cardiovascular events not increased among living kidney donors [3] - < 0.01% of kidney donors die within 3 months of surgery [4]
