antigen KI-67 (MKI67)

Function: - thought to be required for maintaining cell proliferation - interacts with KIF15 - binds through the FHA domain to MKI67IP Structure: - contains 1 FHA domain - contains many Ser/Thr phosphorylation sites Compartment: - nucleus - predominantly localized in G1 phase in perinucleolar region - in later phases, detected throughout the nuclear interior, predominantly localized in the nuclear matrix - in mitosis, present on all chromosomes Alternative splicing: named isoforms=2; long, short Expression: - expression occurs preferentially during late G1 phase, S phase, G2 phase & M phases of the cell cycle - not detected G0 phase Pathology: - MIB-1 is the name of an Ig-G1 antibody against Ki67 which works well in formalin fixed tissues, often used to determine proliferation index of tumors - may help distinguish benign from malignant adrenal cortical tumors
