juxtaglomerular apparatus
Structure:
- the juxtamedullary apparatus is a complex formed from the afferent arteriole of a renal glomerulus & the macula densa region of the ascending limb of the loop of Henle
Function:
- specialized smooth muscle cells within the afferent glomerular arteriolar wall secrete renin
- the juxtaglomerular cells also respond to stretch, indicating the presence of baroreceptors
