JC virus

Supercoiled virus. The virus is so named (JC virus) because it was isolated from the post mortem brain of a patient John Cunningham (JC), with PML. Epidemiology: -JC virus is an opportunistic infection. Infection is common; antibodies to JC virus are present in 80% of adults. Pathology: - etiologic agent of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) - JC virus causes tumors in hamsters. - JC virus contains large T-antigen & 4 other genes Laboratory: - see ARUP consult [3]
