ischial tuberosity
Structure:
- A rough bony projection at the junction of the lower end of the body of the ischium & its ramus.
- A weight-bearing point in the sitting position
- Provides attachment for the sacrotuberous ligament
- Site of origin of the hamstring muscles
- Gluteus maximus forms a pad over this tuberosity
Pathology:
- pain & tenderness over the ischial tuberosity
- may result from chronic pressure on the ischiogluteal bursa
- associated with ischiogluteal bursitis
- provoked by prolonged sitting on a firm surface
