glass electrode (ion-specific electrode, ISE)
Glass electrodes are made from specially formulated glass consisting of a melt of silicon dioxide with added oxides of various metals. Membranes with varying composition of the glass & with directed selectivity for H+, Na+, K+, Li+, Rb+, Cs+, Ag+, Tl+ & NH4+ have been prepared. The membranes generally have a thickness of 10-100 uM. Depending upon the type of glass, their electrical resistance is very high (about 10-100 M Ohms at room temperature) & increases considerably as the temperature decreases.
