Occurrence:

Characteristics:
1) nonmetallic halogen element
2) heavy, volatile, shining blackish gray crystals
3) forms blue-violet gas with irritating odor
4) forms compounds with most elements
5) slightly soluble in water
6) pure iodine is poisonous
