intestinal transplantation

Offered at only a few centers. University of Pittsburg has considerable experience in performing intestinal transplantation [2]. Indications: 1) short bowel syndrome secondary to bowel resection 2) inability to tolerate parenteral nutrition Management: 1) FK506 (tacrolimus) is more effective then cyclosporine for immunosuppression 2) prognosis: a) 1 year survival of 78%; 5 year survival of 63% [2] b) 3 year survival is 29-37% [1]
