Epidemiology: - first surfaced in 2009 - predominant ciculating virus in 2013-2014 flu season [3] - etiologic agent of 1918 Spanish flu [4] - started in Spring of 2018, dissipated over Summer, returned with a vengeance in the fall Pathology: - etiologic agent of swine flu/ avian flu Laboratory: - influenza virus A serology - influenza virus A H1 Ab in serum - influenza virus A N1 Ab in serum - influenza virus A H1 antigen - influenza virus A H1 RNA - influenza virus A neuraminidase RNA - influenza virus identified by culture Complications: - pregnant women are at increased risk for influenza- associated complications [5] Management: - neuraminidase inhibitor use among patients hospitalized with 2009 pandemic H1N1 associated with 19% lower mortality [5]
