indirect antiglobulin test (IAT, indirect Coomb's test)

Clinical significance: ,Agglutination of erythrocytes by specific antihuman antibodies after an in vitro incubation period (when the direct antiglobulin test is negative) indicating that plasma/serum contains anti- erythrocytic antibodies. Depending upon the application, patient, donor or reagent erythrocytes may be used. Indirect antiglobilin test is an in vitro test for: 1) detection & identification of erythrocyte antibodies in sera (type & screen) 2) typing of erythrocyte antigens 3) cross-matching A positive indirect antiglobilin test from a patient specimen does NOT make a diagnosis of hemolysis! A positive test may occur as a result of recent transfusion of red blood cells.
