The broad, flaring portion of the hip bone or bony pelvis
Development:
- it is distinct at birth, but becomes fused with the ischium & the pubis
Structure:
- it consists of a body, which joins the pubis & the ischium to form the acetabulum & a broad thin part, the ala or the wing.
- the iliac crest forms the superior border of the ala.
Function:
- the body of the ilium transmits the weight of the trunk to the femur
- the ala & the crest provide muscle attachment & protect the abdominopelvic viscera
