ileostomy (Kock Pouch)

Indications: - disorders of the colon precluding passage of feces - colectomy for - colorectal carcinoma - ulcerative colitis - familial polyposis coli - diverticulitis - bowel infarction - abdominal trauma Procedure: - establishment of a direct connection of the lumen of the ileum with the outside of the body - a continent ileostomy may be an alternative to using an outside collecting bag - in continent ileostomy, an internal reservoir pouch is created from part of the small intestine (Kock Pouch) - a valve is constructed & a stoma is placed through the abdominal wall - a tube is inserted through the stoma & valve to drain the pouch
