Reference interval: 1) 3-423 IU/mL, age > 17 (median 40 IU/mL), 0-158 IU/mL (VA) 2) 1% of maternal value at term 3) 1.1-10.2 IU/mL, age = 1 year 4) 2.4-34.8 IU/mL. age = 4 years 5) 0.3-215 IU/mL, age = 10 years (mean 24 IU/mL) Increases: 1) parasitic infections 2) allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis 3) pharmaceutical agents: especially gold compounds 4) atopic diseases 5) eczema 6) asthma (60%) 7) hay fever (30%) 8) hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome* 9) Wiskott Aldrich syndrome 10) IgE myeloma 11) IgA deficiency * serum levels of IgE may be determined by polymorphisms in PHF11 gene Methods: - RIA & PRIST (paper radioimmunosorbant test) Specimen: 1) serum 2) fresh or store at 4 degrees C for < 72 hours 3) stable frozen at -20 degrees C for 6 months 4) stable frozen at -70 degrees C indefinitely Notes: - Measurement of total IgE can be misleading - Patient with IgE antibodies to specific allergens may have total IgE serum levels within normal limits.
