intercellular adhesion molecule 1; ICAM-1; major group rhinovirus receptor; CD54 (ICAM1)

Function: - ICAM proteins are ligands for the leukocyte adhesion protein LFA-1 (integrin alpha-L/beta-2) - role in adhesion of leukocytes to endothelium during inflammation. - during leukocyte trans-endothelial migration, ICAM1 engagement promotes the assembly of endothelial apical cups through SGEF & RHOG activation - monoubiquitinated, which is promoted by MARCH9 & leads to endocytosis - interacts with MUC1 & promotes cell aggregation in epithelial cells - interacts with SGEF Structure: - homodimer (probable) - MW depends upon degree of glycosylation - belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily, ICAM family - contains 5 Ig-like C2-type domain (immunoglobulin-like) Compartment: membrane Expression: - B & T cells - monocytes - endothelial cells - normally expressed in low levels on cerebral endothelial cells - epithelial cells - expression induced by IL-1, IL-6, IFN-gamma, TNF Polymorphism: - homozygotes with ICAM1-kalifi Met-56 seem to have an increased risk for cerebral malaria Pathology: - major group rhinovirus receptor - interacts with human herpesvirus 8 MIR2 protein (probable) - binds to coxsackievirus A21 capsid proteins & acts as a receptor for this virus - accumulates in senile plaques of Alzheimer's disease
