hypomania
Etiology:
- bipolar II disorder
Clinical manifestations:
- an episode of illness that resembles mania, but is less intense & less disabling
- euphoric mood
- unrealistic optimism
- increased speech & activity
- decreased need for sleep
- for some, there is increased creativity
- others evidence poor judgment & impaired function
Differential diagnosis:
- in contrast to a manic episode, during a hypomanic episode, functioning is preserved well enough to function at work or socially & does not require hospitalization
