Etiology: 1) primary hypoalphalipoproteinemia 2) secondary causes of diminished HDL: a) type 2 diabetes mellitus b) impaired glucose tolerance c) insulin-resistance d) obesity e) androgen excess in females f) renal failure g) pharmaceutical agents 1] retinoids 2] beta-blockers 3] anabolic steroids* * selective reduction in HDL; other causes of diminished HDL also elevate serum triglycerides Management: - nicotinic acid (niacin) is the drug of choice
