hyperbaric oxygen
Oxygen at greater than atmospheric pressure that can be applied either to the whole patient inside a pressurized chamber or to a localized area (such as an arm or leg) inside a smaller chamber.
Indications:
- poisonings, drug overdose (potentially of benefit)
a) carbon monoxide
b) cyanide poisoning
c) hydrogen sulfide
d) brown recluse spider bite
e) acetaminophen poisoning
f) non healing diabetic foot ulcer (covered by Medicare) [2]
- hyperbaric oxygen decreases amputation rates [3]
- does not decrease need for amputation [6]
Contraindications:
- untreated pneumothorax [3]
- recent chemotherapy with doxorubicin or cisplatin [3]
- caution:
- heart failure
- COPD
- other concurrent antineoplastic agent(s)
- has not been proven effective for treating
- AIDS/HIV1
- Alzheimer's disease [7]
- asthma
- Bell's palsy
- brain injury
- cerebral palsy
- depression
- heart disease
- hepatitis
- migraine
- multiple sclerosis
- Parkinson's disease
- spinal cord injury
- sport's injury
- stroke
Procedure:
diabetic foot ulcer
- treatment applied in chamber for 1.5-2 hours/day for 20-40 days
Adverse effects:
- sinus pain
- ear pressure
- arthralgia
- air embolism
- paralysis
- risk of fire
