heat shock protein beta-1; HspB1; heat shock 27 kD protein; HSP 27; stress-responsive protein 27; SRP27; estrogen-regulated 24 kD protein; 28 kD heat shock protein (HSPB1, HSP27, HSP28)

A member of the hsp20 or low molecular weight hsp family. Function: - role in stress resistance & actin organization - phosphorylated in MCF-7 cells on exposure to a) protein kinase C activators b) heat shock - interacts with TGFB1I1 (putative) - interacts with hspB8, HSPBAP1, CRYAB - associates with: a) alpha-tubulin b) beta-tubulin c) microtubules - induced by a) heat shock b) estrogen stimulation Structure: - belongs to the small heat shock protein (HSP20) family Compartment: - cytoplasm, nucleus, spindle - cytoplasmic in interphase cells - colocalizes with mitotic spindles in mitotic cells - translocates to the nucleus during heat shock Expression: - detected in all tissues tested: skeletal muscle, heart, aorta, large intestine, small intestine, stomach, esophagus, bladder, adrenal gland, thyroid, pancreas, testis, adipose tissue, kidney, liver, spleen, cerebral cortex, blood (serum) & cerebrospinal fluid - highest levels are found in the heart & in tissues composed of striated & smooth muscle - expressed in response to environmental stresses such as heat shock, or estrogen stimulation in MCF-7 cells Pathology: - mutations associated with: a) Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2F (CMT2F) b) distal hereditary motor neuropathy (dHMN)
