horizontal jerk nystagmus
The most common form of nystagmus.
Etiology:
- peripheral vertigo
Clinical manifestations:
- the eyes move repetitively toward one side slowly, then quickly back

Clinical significance:
- it is normal to have some degree of horizontal jerk nystagmus on extreme lateral gaze, but marked degrees are abnormal
