HIV envelope glycoprotein gp120

Derived from HIV envelope glycoprotein gp160 Function: 1) attaches virus to host lymphoid cell by binding to CD4 - interaction induces a structural rearrangement creating high-affinity binding site for a chemokine coreceptor, i.e. CXCR4 &/or CCR5 - interaction allows gp120 to maintain a cryptic conformation, protected from neutralizing antibodies 2) ligand for CD209 (found on dendritic cells) & CLEC4M (found on endothelial cells of liver sinusoids & lymph node sinuses) - allows capture of viral particles at mucosal surfaces by these cells & subsequent transmission to permissive cells
