Pharmacology: histamine phosphate, histamine diphosphate
Indications:
1) diagnostic testing for achlorhydria
2) diagnostic testing for pheochromocytoma
3) symptomatic relief from dizziness/vertigo
4) antigen desensitization [3]
Contraindications:
1) severe hypertension
2) hypotension
3) bronchial asthma
4) vasomotor instability
5) urticaria
6) severe cardiac, pulmonary or renal disease
Dosage:
1) gastric function testing:
- 0.0275 mg/kg histamine phosphate (10 ug/kg histamine) SC
2) pheochromocytoma
a) 0.0275 mg/kg histamine phosphate (10 ug/kg histamine) IV
b) if no response with 5 minutes, 0.1375 mg/kg histamine phosphate (50 ug/kg histamine) IV
3) monitor blood pressure frequently during & immediately following administration
4) dizziness: 3 drops under tongue prn
Injection:
1) 0.55 mg (equivalent to 0.2 mg histamine base)/mL (5 mL)
2) 2.75 mg (equivalent to 1.0 mg histamine base)/mL (1 mL)
