huntington-interacting protein 2; ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme E2-25 kDa (HIP2, UBE2K)

Function: 1) catalyzes covalent attachment of ubiquitin to other proteins 2) degradation of short-lived & abnormal proteins 3) ubiquitinates huntingtin 4) foam cell formation by suppression of apoptosis of lipid-bearing macrophages via ubiquitination & degradation of p53. Compartment: cytoplasm Alternative splicing: named isoforms=2 Expression: - expressed in spleen, thymus, prostate, testis, ovary, small intestine, colon, peripheral blood leukocytes, T-lymphocytes, monocytes, granulocytes & bone marrow mononuclear cells - highly expressed in brain, cortex, striatum > cerebellum, brainstem - induced by aggregated low-density lipoprotein
