chlorhexidine (Peridex, Hibiclens, Nolvasan, Bactigras, Arlacide H)
Tradename: Peridex, Hibiclens.
Indications:
1) antibacterial dental rinse for treatment of oral cavity infections
a) gingivitis
b) aphthous stomatitis
2) soap for eradication of MRSA
3) prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia [3]
* does not reduce nosocomial infection in critically ill ICU patients [4]
Dosage:
1) dental rinse (Peridex)
a) swish 15 mL undiluted oral rinse around in mouth for 30 sec, then expectorate
b) do NOT swallow
c) use twice daily in the treatment of gingivitis
d) precede use by brushing & flossing
2) topical agent for use on skin
- QD-TID use
Solution:
- dental rinse: 0.12% with alcohol 11.6%. (480 mL)
- Hibiclens (topical): 4%, 8 oz (OTC)
Adverse effects:
1) staining of oral surfaces
2) change or reduction in taste
3) anaphylaxis (rare) [5]
4) FIRE risk ??
Mechanism of action:
- binds bacterial cell wall resulting in altered osmotic homeostasis & cell death
