Clinical significance:
- hepatitis D virus only infects patients with concurrent hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection
Laboratory:
1) anti HDV in serum (serology)
2) HDAg indicates active infection
3) HBeAg is negative (HBV replication is suppressed)
RT-PCR/northern blot/in-situ hybridization is confirmatory

anti-hepatitis D antibody (hepatitis delta agent antibody, anti-HDV)
hepatitis D (delta agent) antigen in body fluid
hepatitis D virus Ab in body fluid; hepatitis delta agent Ab in body fluid
hepatitis D virus IgG in serum
