hepatitis C genotyping

Indications: - hepatitis C infection Reference interval: - test may be unsuccessful if HCV RNA viral load is < log 3.3 or 2000 IU/mL [2] Clinical significance: - hepatitis C infection is caused by one of 6 major gentotypes of hepatitis C virus (1-6) [2] - hepatitis C virus types 2 & 3 respond to lower doses & shorter duration of therapy with pegylated interferon-alpha than other types - hepatitis C virus type 1b responds poorly to therapy with pegylated interferon-alpha Method: - direct sequencing of 5' non-coding region - limitations in differentiating subtype 1a from 1b [2] - line probe analysis Specimen: - serum, plasma Notes: - Abbott RealTime HCV Genotype II can differentiate HCV genotypes 1, 1a, 1b, 2, 3, 4, & 5 [4]
