Indications: - surgical excision of hemorrhoid(s) Procedure: - rubber band ligation better than bipolar electrocoagulation - band ligation systems available that can be applied using standard esophageal variceal banding devices Complications: - severe pain, bleeding, & rarely serious infection associated with rubber band ligation - not a minor procedure in frail elderly nursing home residents [3] - worsening fecal incontinence - cardiovascular or pulmonary problems within 30 days [3] - death within 1 year [3]
